Around half the world’s population lives in more than 70 countries holding national elections in 2024. With roughly two billion eligible voters, this is being described as the largest election year in history. The most high-profile election this year was undoubtedly the U.S. election in November, however, this was just the third-largest election in terms of eligible voters, behind India and the European Parliament. With so many heading to the polls, this was considered a defining year for democracy, particularly regarding the global democratic backslide observed since the mid-2010s, which has given way to a rise in autocracy and populism across the globe. The general trend in 2024 (in non-authoritarian countries) was that results were unfavourable for incumbent parties, with new leaders elected in Indonesia, Pakistan, the UK, and the U.S., and weaker performances by ruling parties in the EU, France, India, Japan, and South Africa - Mexico was the only major economy where the incumbent party improved upon their previous result. It is widely speculated that recent global economic crises and international conflicts were the largest international drivers of change, on top of various domestic issues.
